Super Tuesday results are coming for a series of consecutive results primaries Congressional and local offices are shaping up across the country, as are races for governor.
Democratic Rep. Colin Allred won the nomination of his party In Texas, Republican Sen. Ted Cruz will face off, NBC News projects, setting up a race that will garner national attention this fall.
Posting strong fundraising totals, Allred narrowly missed the majority needed to avoid a runoff.
Republicans need just two seats to take control of the Senate, or one seat if the party wins the White House because the vice president cast tie-breaking votes in the upper chamber. Democrats face a very difficult map with several offensive opportunities, one of which is in Texas.
In North Carolina, NBC News profiles Republican Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson and Democratic Attorney General Josh Stein. wabout their party primaries for the governor.
Robinson is a conservative culture warrior who makes controversial comments and has the support of former President Donald Trump. Stein won the support of the state’s Democratic elite in his primary election.
The general election to replace term-limited Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper will likely feature many of the same themes that will define the presidential race. North Carolina is one of only two presidential states, along with New Hampshire, to hold a gubernatorial election this year.
Voters in five states — California, Texas, North Carolina, Alabama and Arkansas — cast ballots in a series of down-ballot races to decide which candidates will advance to November. It includes several notable House races.
Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, D-Texas, a longtime member of the Houston area, will win the NBC News primary against former Houston City Council member Amanda Edwards. Jackson Lee originally wanted to leave his current seat to run for mayor of Houston, but failed before deciding to seek re-election to the House last year. Jackson’s Lee 18th District is heavily Democratic.
Meanwhile, Republican Brandon Gill easily won the crowded GOP primary in Texas’ open 26th District, NBC News projects. Gill, the son-in-law of far-right activist Dinesh D’Souza, won Trump’s endorsement in the race.
Two super PACs funded by GOP megadonors He spent more than 2 million dollars against Gill. However, the 29-year-old is expected to easily compete in the Republican district in the fall.
In North Carolina, candidates must clear the 30% threshold in the primary to avoid a runoff. Former Rep. Mark Walker is headed to a runoff in the state’s 6th District against fellow Trump-backed Republican Addison McDowell.
There will also be a runoff in Alabama’s 2nd District, a new heavily black seat created by a 2023 federal court order. Black residents make up about a quarter of the population, but there has long been only one district with a black majority. The new district’s voting-age population is just shy of a black majority.
Shomari Figures, former deputy chief of staff and counsel to Attorney General Merrick Garland, will advance to the second round of NBC News projects. His opponent has not yet been determined.
In Texas voting, Attorney General Ken Paxton is on a revenge tour, backing his primary challengers to GOP lawmakers who voted to impeach him last year.
In Texas, candidates must pass the majority threshold to avoid a runoff between the top two finishers.
In Alabama, Republican Reps. Jerry Carl and Barry Moore were forced into a rare primary against an incumbent in the 1st District after new congressional lines were drawn. The new maps also created a second-majority Black district in the state.
California, where polls close at 11 p.m. ET, has many competitive congressional primaries under the state’s unique system, where the top two vote-getters advance to the general election, regardless of party.
The marquee race is for Senate, pitting Democratic representatives Adam Schiff, Kathy Porter and Barbara Lee against Republican Steve Garvey, a former Los Angeles Dodger player.
California will definitely remain in the Democratic column this fall. But the primary will determine whether the race becomes a potentially contentious intra-party battle or a standard Democrat-Republican battle in the deep blue state.
The state too hosts nine competitive US House races this will play a major role in the overall battle for control of the ward.
Given how many California voters vote by mail, results in some races may not be finalized for days.
