WASHINGTON – A three-judge panel of the US Circuit Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia has upheld Steve Bannon’s conviction on two counts of contempt of Congress.
After his conviction in 2022, Bannon was convicted and sentenced to 4 months in prison. However, the trial judge overturned Bannon’s sentence, allowing him to remain free pending his appeal.
Bannon still has the option of asking a full bench of the D.C. Circuit to hear his case, or he can appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court for review.
The order, issued by the D.C. Circuit, says the judges’ mandate will officially take effect seven days after the next appeals attempt is resolved. That means Bannon is unlikely to report to prison immediately.
Bannon, an aide to former President Donald Trump, was tried in July 2022 after a jury found him guilty of two counts of contempt of Congress. selection committee of the ward Investigating the January 6, 2021 uprising.
He argued before the appeals court last fall an attempt to overturn a four-month prison sentence, Bannon’s lawyer argued that his client could not comply with the subpoenas because Trump had used executive privilege. In addition to the prison term, Bannon was fined $6,500.
