BURLINGTON, Vt. – Bernie Sanders, an eighty-two-year-old liberal US senator from Vermont, announced on Monday that he is running again for the presidency, saying that American democracy is in question in difficult times for the country and the world.

In an announcement video, he said that in many ways the 2024 election was “the most impactful election of our lifetime.”
“Will the United States even continue to function as a democracy, or will we degenerate into an authoritarian form of government?” he said in a video message. He questioned whether the country could reverse what he called “unprecedented levels of income and wealth inequality” and create a government that works for all and a political system not dominated by wealthy campaigners.
