Former President Donald Trump said Wednesday he would debate President Joe Biden “anytime, anywhere, anywhere” as the two turned their attention to a general election rematch a day after dominating the Super Tuesday primaries.
“It is important for the good of our country that Joe Biden and I discuss issues of vital importance to America and the American people,” Trump wrote on the Truth social media platform. “That’s why I call for Debates ANYTIME, ANYWHERE, EVERYWHERE!”
Trump has refused to participate in the Republican primary debates and has long criticized the candidates’ meetings in the general election, hosted by the Commission on Presidential Debates. But on Wednesday, he said he would go toe-to-toe with Biden in committee debates or even debates hosted by the Democratic National Committee if the president agrees.
Biden has not yet said whether he will debate Trump before the November election. White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre deflected a question from Fox News earlier Wednesday about whether avoiding the debates would cast doubt on Biden’s “toughness.”
“Talk to the campaign,” Jean-Pierre said.
In a statement, Biden campaign spokesman Michael Tyler declined to comment on whether the president would discuss it, suggesting it was a discussion for a later date.
“I know Donald Trump is hungry for attention and struggling to expand his appeal beyond the MAGA base — and we’ll do that at the right time this cycle,” Tyler said. “But if he’s so desperate to see President Biden in his prime, he doesn’t have to wait! He can join the tens of millions of Americans who will tune in to watch the State of the Union tomorrow night.
