The Smokehouse Creek fire became the largest in state history on Thursday.
The previous largest was the East Amarillo fire in 2006, which burned about 907,000 acres, according to statistics from the Texas A&M Forest Service, a state agency.
Other fires currently burning include the 144,000-acre Windy Deuce Fire in Moore County, officials said. On Monday, it was 55%.
The Grape Vine Creek fire in Gray County was 34,882 acres and 60% contained.
Temperatures in the region were forecast to rise this week, but then a cold front would bring a chance of rain starting Friday, the National Weather Service in Amarillo said.
The Texas A&M Forest Service said in an update Monday that moisture in the grasslands is increasing, meaning the fires will be easier to fight.
“Overall, burning conditions are markedly improved from yesterday’s weather conditions and firefighting capabilities on the ground are greatly improved,” the agency said.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott has issued a disaster declaration for the fires, and a request for assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency has been approved.
President Joe Biden said late last week that FEMA would guarantee that Texas, as well as Oklahoma, would be reimbursed for firefighting efforts.
Federal aid has covered 500 federal workers in Texas, including more than 100 federal firefighters, “and more are on the way,” Biden said Friday in Brownsville. Aircraft and other equipment were also sent.
