California’s Democratic governor, Gavin Newsom, said Saturday that the Alabama Supreme Court’s ruling that embryos are human is part of a “war on women.”
“This is not just a war on travel. This is not just a war on reproductive health. It is also a war on women more broadly defined,” she said.
Newsom also condemned the former president Donald Trumpwho is informed to privately consider supporting a 16-week federal abortion ban with some exceptions.
“It is generous of him to include exceptions. What a kind soul,” Newsom quipped, adding, “And 16 weeks? Because it’s an even number?
“These people are not serious,” he said.
Newsom also warned that while Trump supports the 16-week ban, he would expect other Republicans to support more extreme options: “If you [South Carolina GOP Sen.] Lindsey Graham and others will drop it well below 16.
Within months of the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade in 2022, abortion was banned or severely restricted. dozens of states, according to NBC News estimates.
