Republican county supervisor in Arizona pladed guilty State Attorney General Chris Mayes announced Monday after trying to delay the certification of the 2022 midterm election results.
Cochise County Supervisor Peggy Judd pleaded guilty to failing to perform her duties as an election official. According to the General Prosecutor’s Office, he admitted that he failed to complete the elections as required by law.
Judd will be sentenced to at least 90 days of unsupervised probation and pay a maximum fine of $500, the attorney general’s office said. NBC News has reached out to him for comment.
“Any attempt to interfere in the elections in Arizona will not be tolerated. My office will continue to seek justice and ensure that anyone who undermines our election system is held accountable,” Democrat Mayes said in a statement.
Mayes added, “Today’s plea agreement and sentencing should serve as a reminder that I will not hesitate to use every means available to uphold the rule of law and protect the integrity of Arizona’s elections.”
It was Judd the state was initially indicted by a grand jury In November 2023, along with fellow Cochise County Supervisor Tom Crosby, he tried to delay the certification of the 2022 election results. They were charged with two felony counts, conspiracy to delay the certification of election results and interfering with the Secretary of State’s work in all states. Both are felonies that carry a prison sentence of 6 months to 2½ years.
Even before the 2022 midterm elections, Judd and Crosby questioned the voting machines in use in their county and sought to count ballots by hand, which Arizona law does not allow. Judd attended former President Donald Trump’s “Stop Theft” rally in Washington on January 6, 2021; in an interview with Tucson Sentinelhe, along with other protesters, refused to enter the Capitol after the rally.
