Former President Donald Trump said Thursday that if elected to a second term in November, he would immediately fire special counsel Jack Smith, who brought two federal indictments against Trump.
Conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt Trump asked if he plans to pardon himself or fire Smith on the day he is sworn in.
“It’s so easy – I’d fire him in two seconds,” he said.Immunity in the Supreme Courtand called Smith a “crooked man.”
The former president also said he didn’t think he would impeach Smith if he fired him from the Justice Department if Democrats regained the House majority.
Smith’s office declined to comment on Trump’s remarks. His firing as special counsel could end the federal government’s prosecution of Trump. Although Smith has appealed the decision to dismiss the classified documents case against the former president in Florida, the special counsel is still pursuing the election interference case against him in Washington.
Trump successfully delayed trial in the election meddling case over his claims of presidential immunity, which was ruled by the Supreme Court in July, so no trial has been set in the case.
