Border Patrol agents detained just over 84,000 migrants crossing the US southern border in June, the lowest monthly number since then. President Joe Biden An official of the Department of National Security told NBC News that he took office in 2021.

The number of apprehensions in June was about 30 percent lower than in May, compared with more than 117,000 apprehensions of migrants passing through the Border Patrol’s legal ports of entry. The Biden administration attributed the decline to new asylum restrictions the president announced in early June.

CBS News reported the number of June migrant apprehensions along the US-Mexico border fell for the fourth consecutive month. Customs and Border Protection will not officially release the June figures to the public until later this month.

The last time migrant crossings were less than 97,000 was in January 2021, the month Biden took office, with just over 75,000 Border Patrol apprehensions.

Some U.S. officials, who spoke to NBC News on condition of anonymity, said the drop in numbers was partly due to high temperatures in June and increased restrictions on migrants entering the United States by Mexican authorities.
