The Congressional Black Caucus on Tuesday condemned comments by U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-D., accusing Democrats of “worshipping” George Floyd, a black man killed by Minneapolis police four years ago.
“This is impossible even for @RepMTG,” the caucus said he wrote “George Floyd did not deserve to die, and a member of Congress should have the decency to recognize his humanity,” wrote X.
The caucus’ comments came after Green X released a video in which he described Floyd as a “convicted felon” whom Democrats “still worship.” Congressional hearings on the origins of COVID come days after former President Donald Trump said some Republicans “blindly worship” criminals He was judged on 34 articles falsifying business records.
Addressing Dr. Anthony Fauci, who appeared to testify before the panel on Monday, Raskin apologized to his Republican colleagues, who he said treated him “like a convicted felon.”
“Actually, you probably wish they’d treat you like a convicted felon. They treat convicted criminals with love and admiration. “Some of them blindly worship convicted criminals,” Raskin said.
“There’s Jamie Raskin accusing us of worshiping Trump. Worshiping a ‘convicted felon,'” Green told the reporter in the clip.
When a reporter pointed out that Trump would be convicted, Greene said, “Yes, George Floyd, everybody, you — the media — worship George Floyd. Democrats worship George Floyd. There were riots burning the streets. —— On George Floyd country.”
“I’m sick and tired of Democrats pretending Republicans worship Donald Trump,” Greene said he wrote in the post accompanying the clip. “I worship God! Democrats still worship George Floyd the Convict.”
Floyd died on May 25, 2020, after former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin kneeled on his neck for nine minutes and 29 seconds. Chauvin was found guilty of murder and Floyd’s death sparked a nationwide reckoning with racism and police violence.
A spokesman for Greene did not immediately return a request for comment Tuesday night.
Trump was convicted on Thursday on 34 counts of falsifying business records related to the reimbursement of former attorney Michael Cohen to porn actress Stormi Daniels in the final days of the 2016 campaign. Trump has pleaded not guilty in the case and denied allegations that Daniels had sex with him in 2006. His sentencing in the case is scheduled for July 11.
