On Sunday, South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott did not directly answer multiple questions about whether he would accept the results of the 2024 presidential election, regardless of who wins.
“At the end of the day, the 47th president of the United States will be President Donald Trump,” Scott, a Republican, said during his first NBC News interview when asked directly if he would accept the election results. “Meet the press.”
Again by Moderator Kristen Welker, “Yes or No?” To the initial question, Scott simply said, “That’s my statement.”
Pressed a third time to answer the question, Scott said, “I look forward to President Trump being the 47th president — the American people will make the decision.”
Scott ran for president last year, challenging Trump for the Republican nomination. He dropped out in November and eventually endorsed the former president.

But after the 2020 presidential election, when Trump questioned the integrity of the election and falsely claimed voter fraud occurred in various states across the country, Scott suggested a different tone.
Ahead of the January 6, 2021 congressional hearing to confirm the results of the presidential election, Scott he said“The president’s legal team has exercised its right to appeal by filing lawsuits in state and federal courts in multiple states. Some of these lawsuits have even been presided over and decided by conservative judges appointed by President Trump. So far, no justice, judge or fact finder has found evidence that the election results in the states should be annulled.”
He added, “As I read the Constitution, there is no constitutional means for Congress to nullify the election by which the states approve and send electors,” and then voted to confirm the presidential election results.
Even later on the campaign trail, Scott disagreed with voters who claimed the 2020 election was stolen.
“I don’t believe the election was stolen. I believe the states have created a new system, mail-in ballots, without signature verification,” Scott said during a campaign rally in Davenport, Iowa, in June.
After questions from an audience member about the election being “rigged,” Scott added: “There was rigging, but was the election stolen? There’s a difference. I think every election is rigged.”
