WASHINGTON – U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio said Thursday that he would be “honored” to offer a spot on former President Donald Trump’s 2024 ticket.

“I think credit should be given to anyone who suggested it, but I haven’t talked to anybody in Trump world about it,” Rubio said.

This was reported by NBC News On Wednesday, Rubio was among more than a dozen possible choices on Trump’s list, and he said he has been gaining traction lately. As Florida’s two most prominent Republican figures, the two men have a number of mutual allies who would welcome the pairing on the party’s national ticket.

“It’s clear from Trump’s orbit that Rubio is in the game,” a veteran Florida GOP operative said Wednesday. “It makes sense because it pretty much checks both boxes to be from Florida.”

The Constitution prohibits electors from voting for a presidential or vice presidential candidate from their state. But there are solutions to this problem: Texan Dick Cheney resumed residency in Wyoming in 2000 before becoming Texan George W. Bush’s running mate.

Rubio has said he has not spoken to Trump about the case, but a Trump adviser told NBC News on Wednesday that no direct contact has yet been made with any candidate. Other potential running mates include Rep. Elise Stefanik, RN.Y., retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson and Sen. Tim Scott, RS.C.

In a brief interview Thursday, Rubio did not say he would be interested in the role.

“Anyone who is offered the chance to serve their country as vice president should consider it an honor,” he said. “I mean, I’m in the civil service.

He then reiterated that he had not spoken to Trump or any of the former president’s aides.

“If that changes, I’ll let you know,” he said.
