On Tuesday, Donald Trump’s lawyers filed a motion for a new trial in the libel case against author E. Jean Carroll and asked the judge overseeing the case to overturn the trial. $83 million judgment against the former president.
Trump’s attorneys, Alina Habba and John Sauer, argue that “if the conviction is against the weight of the evidence, the district court may grant the motion for a new trial.” Habba also argued that the jury’s compensatory and punitive awards were disproportionate and based on sympathy rather than evidence and should be overturned.
Carroll’s attorney, Roberta Kaplan, declined to comment.
This is an evolving story.
