Facebook, Instagram and other Meta platforms experienced a significant break in the morning Super Tuesday.
Experts from three organizations that monitor Internet traffic, KentishNetBlocks and ThousandEyes confirmed that Meta’s various companies — Facebook, Instagram, Threads and Messenger — experienced a major drop in traffic on Tuesday morning.
The outages were related to how users can access and cover multiple countries. Netblocks said, and it appeared that many Facebook users had logged out of their accounts. The meta servers are still online and accessible, Thousand Eyes saidindicates that the problems are most likely a backend service issue.
Some of these services, notably Facebook, are used by major political campaigns, and outages could prevent them from reaching voters, as 16 states and one U.S. territory hold presidential elections, and five states hold Senate, House, gubernatorial and local primaries.
A high-ranking official of the Cyber Security and Infrastructure Security Agency, who called the press with journalists about the elections, said that the agency is aware of the cut. “We are aware of the incident and at this time we are not aware of any specific election connection or anything. special malicious cyber activity,” the official said.
Intermittent crashes of even large websites are often a configuration issue and are usually quickly resolved. It wasn’t immediately clear what Meta’s problem was or what the timetable was for fixing it.
Meta spokesperson Andy Stone He wrote in X “We know that people have difficulty accessing our services. We are currently working on it.”
