the president Joe Biden‘s campaign intends to recognize the increased campaign staff’s union organizing efforts, two sources familiar with the matter told NBC News.
The move will trigger collective bargaining between the re-elected organization’s management and qualified staff over conditions such as wages, hours of work and overtime pay. The union will represent the staff at headquarters and in states located in the war zone.
Biden’s labor union will be affiliated with the Campaign Workers Guild, which represents staff for several Democratic state parties and other campaigns. Officially members of the Democratic National Committee created unity Joins SEIU in 2022.
Campaign staff mergers are a fairly recent phenomenon. Working on political campaigns, especially at the highest levels, usually meant low pay and long hours for less than a year.
The CWG’s mission statement notes that until its founding, “campaign workers routinely worked twice the standard workweek below minimum wage and received no health benefits.”
“We sacrifice our health, financial security, and leisure time to support candidates and movements we hope will make our society more prosperous, just, and inclusive, but our employers don’t always live up to the values they publicly espouse.” notes.
But Biden’s 2020 campaign joined other Democratic campaigns in recognizing the labor union after emerging as the party’s presumptive nominee.
Organized labor has been a pillar of Biden’s political coalition, and his campaign has relied heavily on it. alliances endorsed him to help get his economic message across to key voters.
