WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court on Tuesday rejected appeals filed by lawyers for Trump allies who face legal sanctions for falsely claiming in court that the 2020 election in Michigan was fraudulently won by President Joe Biden.
Rejecting the appeals, the court upheld a June 2023 ruling by the US 6th Circuit Court of Appeals that partially upheld the sanctions.
Sidney Powell and Lynn Wood, prominent figures in former President Donald Trump’s efforts to overturn the election, were among nine lawyers facing sanctions for filing the lawsuit. Powell called the group “Kraken”.
An appeals court upheld the sanctions against seven of them, including Powell and Wood.
The attorneys were ordered to pay attorney’s fees, undergo new legal training, and were referred to the appropriate state bar for any disciplinary proceedings.
The lawsuit alleged, among other things, an international conspiracy to swing votes to Biden and that “hostile foreign governments” had access to the voting machines.
Attorneys withdrew the lawsuit after the election was certified, but before the defendants, including state officials, sought sanctions.
Powell and Wood, as well as other lawyers tied to Trump, have faced other investigations as part of their involvement in the 2020 election.
