WASHINGTON – President Joe Biden has directed his administration to impose major sanctions to hold Russia accountable for last week’s death of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny.
National Security Council spokesman John Kirby told reporters on Tuesday that a package of sanctions, intended to mark the second anniversary of Russia’s intervention in Ukraine, will be announced on Friday.
Kirby stressed that one of the strongest steps the United States can take to stand up to Russian President Vladimir Putin is for Congress to pass an emergency spending bill to help Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan.
