Former New York Gov. Paterson and stepson attacked in Manhattan while on walk

Former New York Gov. David Paterson and his stepson were attacked Friday during a walk in Manhattan by assailants who had a “previous relationship” with his stepson, Paterson’s spokesman said.

Paterson, 70, and his adult stepson went to the hospital as a precaution after the attack on Second Avenue in East Harlem, according to Paterson’s spokesman Sean Darcy and the NYPD.

“Governor Paterson and his stepson were walking around the neighborhood near their home this evening when they were attacked by some people who were previously associated with his stepson,” Darcy said.

“They both sustained some injuries but were able to fight off their attackers,” Darcy said.

Paterson was the lieutenant governor was under Governor Eliot Spitzer and succeeded Spitzer as governor in March 2008. resigned mid-term after the prostitution scandal. Paterson served the remainder of the term until the end of 2010. He did not seek re-election.

A police report has been filed, Darcy said.

When officers arrived, Paterson had injuries to his head and another man had injuries to his face, police said. Both are in stable condition.

No arrests have been made in connection with the attack, police said, and an investigation is underway.
