In an opinion was published in To New York Times On Saturday, Sen. Bernie Sanders defended President Joe Biden’s decision to remain the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, tweeting, “I will do everything in my power to see President Biden re-elected.” and called on party members to stop “fighting and arguing” about his candidacy.
The Vermont independent, who was one of several candidates in the 2020 Democratic primary that Biden ultimately won, added that Biden is “the most effective president in the modern history of our country and the strongest candidate to defeat Donald Trump.”
His piece comes two weeks after Biden’s dismal debate speech against former President Donald Trump.
Still, Sanders, 82, criticized the “corporate media” for “focusing on the June presidential debate and the cognitive capabilities of a person who has perhaps the most difficult and stressful job in the world.”
He also accused Democrats of joining a “round-robin firing squad” who questioned Biden’s mental fitness and whether he would be strong enough to defeat Trump again.
Till now, 18 Democratic legislators appealed to Biden stepping aside as the party’s presidential candidate.
Sanders’ written remarks acknowledged that Biden, 81, “may not be the ideal candidate,” but added that “he will and should be the candidate.”
“It’s time for Democrats to stop arguing and talking,” the senator wrote.
Sanders has consistently defended Biden since the debate, arguing that the election is about politics, not age.
“What we’re talking about right now is not the Grammy Award competition for best singer,” Sanders said in an interview on CBS News’ “Face the Nation” last week, adding, “What we need to focus on is politics, and he has policies and they will benefit. The vast majority of people in this country.”
