WASHINGTON — The GOP-led House Oversight Committee issued subpoenas Wednesday for three White House aides are requesting depositions to discuss President Joe Biden’s cognitive state.
Subpoenas, first reported by Axiosfirst lady Jill Biden’s senior adviser Anthony Bernal, White House deputy chief of staff Annie Tomasini and senior White House adviser Ashley Williams.
The letters accompanying the subpoenas allege that the aides “have first-hand knowledge of the extent to which President Biden personally performs the duties of his office and whether he is capable of doing so.”
“The committee seeks this information to examine whether it is time for Congress to reconsider potential legislation to address oversight of presidents’ eligibility to serve pursuant to their authority under Section 4 of the Twenty-Fifth Amendment,” the letters state.
Rep. James Comer, R-Ky., the committee chairman, said the panel was concerned that these aides “may be intervening on behalf of the President and perhaps doing some of the President’s work for him.”
“President Biden is clearly unfit for office, but his staff is trying to hide the truth from the American people,” he said.
Reached for comment, White House spokesman Ian Sams criticized Comer, calling the subpoenas “a baseless political game designed to gain media attention rather than legitimate oversight.”
“His partisan attacks on the president have been discredited, and now he continues to humiliate the House by weaponizing subpoenas to get headlines instead of seeking information through due constitutional process,” Sams said.
Comer, a frequent critic of Biden, was at the center of a Republican-led impeachment inquiry against the president. Republicans did not produce Evidence that Biden engaged in criminal activity.
The three aides had previously been asked to appear before the committee as part of the investigation into Biden’s classified documents, but the committee said the White House blocked them from speaking.
The committee asked the aides to respond by July 17 to discuss the deposition.
The subpoenas come days after Comer requested Biden’s doctor. Kevin O’Connorsee for a transcribed interview on the president’s health.
Sams had previously criticized the request, citing Fox News anchor Maria Bartiromo, saying, “Here they are, coming up with their crazy, discredited conspiracy theories to give Bartiromo another hit.”
Biden’s controversial performance last month sparked widespread concern among Democrats about his re-election prospects due to his age and fitness for office.
