Former President Donald Trump defeated Vice President Kamala Harris to become the next President of the United States. NBC News predictedbut he did not do so with the help of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender voters.
LGBT voters have reportedly shifted even more firmly to the Democratic camp this year NBC News Exit Poll. According to the poll, Harris led President-elect Trump 86% to 12% among LGBT voters. That’s a 15-point change from 2020, when Trump won 27% of the LGBT vote against Biden.
Harris’s performance among LGBT voters was stronger than any Democratic candidate in the last five presidential elections.
Although Republican vice presidential candidate Sen. JD Vance predicted he and Trump would win.a normal gay guy votes,” the GOP presidential ticket captured fewer than 1 in 5 LGBT male voters, though that number may include bisexual and transgender men. Among LGBT female voters, Trump’s support was even weaker, at 8%. White LGBT people favored Harris over Trump, 82% to 16%, although Harris’ margin was larger among LGBT voters of color, 91% to 5%.
A majority of LGBT voters said they would be either “excited” (39%) or “optimistic” (43%) if Harris were elected president. Conversely, 62% of LGBT respondents said they would be “scared” if Trump won.
According to the results of the exit poll, 8% of American voters identified as LGBT in 2024. This is a record indicator. Since Barack Obama was elected president in 2008, the percentage of voters who identify as LGBT has doubled from 4% at the time.
As in previous elections, LGBT voters stood out as one of the most left-leaning voting blocs of the electorate. Among LGBT voters, Democrats outnumber Republicans 56% to 5%, and liberals outnumber conservatives 61% to 5%. LGBT voters are strongly pro-choice: 59% say abortion should be legal in all cases, with a higher level of support for abortion rights than non-LGBT voters, at 31%.
