An Afghan national living in Oklahoma was charged this week with conspiracy to commit a terrorist attack Election day on behalf of Islamic State terrorist groupAccording to court documents unsealed Tuesday.
Nasir Ahmad Tawhedi, 27, was arrested on Monday on suspicion of conspiring and attempting to provide financial support to ISIS and obtaining firearms and ammunition to carry out a violent attack in the United States on behalf of the terrorist group. Towhedi made his initial appearance Tuesday in federal court in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, before U.S. Magistrate Judge Suzanne Mitchell.
According to the court documents, Tovhedi mentioned in the intercepted communications that he planned the attack on November 5, election day. In an interview after his arrest, he confirmed that the attack was intended to target large gatherings and that he was expected to die the day before. a martyr along with a young assassin.
According to court documents, Towhedi attempted to liquidate his family’s assets, move family members abroad and acquire AK-47 assault rifles and ammunition.
Attorney General Merrick Garland said in a statement Tuesday that the Justice Department “will continue to combat the continuing threat posed by ISIS and its supporters to America’s national security, and we will identify, investigate and prosecute those who seek to terrorize the American people.” .”
