In what appears to be a “he said, he said” situation President-elect Donald Trump and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum they seem to have completely different memories of the conversation surrounding the issue of migration.
After the phone call late Wednesday, Trump wrote on social media that the Mexican leader had agreed to freeze immigration to Mexico and the United States.
“We just had a great conversation with the new president of Mexico, Claudia Scheinbaum Pardo. “He agreed to stop migration to the United States through Mexico and effectively closed our southern border,” he said. Truth Social. “It was a very productive conversation!”
Scheinbaum’s account differed from Trump’s.
“In our conversation with President Trump, I explained to him the comprehensive strategy followed by Mexico to solve the phenomenon of migration while respecting human rights.” He said in X. “We reiterate that Mexico’s position is not to close the borders, but rather to build bridges between the government and the people.”
Earlier, Scheinbaum said that he “had a great conversation with President Donald Trump.”
“I shared with him that the caravans are not coming to the northern border because they are being served in Mexico,” he wrote in the post, referring to the large groups of migrants traveling together in hopes of reaching the United States.
The phone call between the two leaders came just days after Trump said his incoming administration would take place new tariffs on imported goods from MexicoCanada and China From January 20.
Trump said in his post about it Truth Social On Monday, he said he plans to “impose a 25% Tariff on ALL products from Mexico and Canada” imported into the US, a proposal he made in response to the ongoing fentanyl crisis.
Trump said the tariff would remain in place until “Drugs, especially Fentanyl, and all Illegal Aliens stop this Invasion of our Country.”
