Rep. Nancy Mace says her anti-trans bathroom bill ‘absolutely’ targets Rep.-elect Sarah McBride

WASHINGTON — Rep. Nancy Mays, R.C., said Tuesday that her effort to ban transgender women from using women’s bathrooms at the U.S. Capitol is in direct response to her election as president. Sarah McBridewho will first hepen a transgender person In Congress.

Mace presented a resolution Monday to ban any lawmaker and House staff from “using single-sex means other than those corresponding to their biological sex.”

“Yes and absolutely and then some,” Mays told reporters, adding, “I will absolutely 100% stand in the way of any man who wants to be in the women’s restroom, in our locker rooms, in our locker rooms. I will fight you every step of the way.”

Mace said he would like to see his resolution included in the House Rules package for the next Congress. He also said he is working on legislation that would prohibit such a dynamic in federally owned and federally funded schools.

a Type in X McBride said Monday night, “Every day Americans go to work with people who have different life journeys than they do and deal with them with respect, and I hope that members of Congress will also muster that kind of kindness.”

A spokeswoman for McBride declined to comment further Tuesday.

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., said Mace’s legislation “doesn’t go far enough.” Greene also suggested he would be willing to get into a physical altercation if McBride used the women’s restrooms.

House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., said Tuesday that Republicans are trying to resolve the issue but will make room for McBride.

“This is an unprecedented issue, so we will go, we will find a solution that solves the problem, but we are working on it … and watch how we respond,” he said.

He added: “We welcome with open arms all new members who are duly elected representatives of the people. I believe this is a mandate that we treat all people with dignity and respect….this is an issue that Congress should have never before addressed. We will do it thoughtfully, with the consensus of the members, and we will meet the needs of every person.”
