MIAMI – With the presidential election less than two weeks away, NBC News and MSNBC met with a group of voters in Miami-Dade County, Florida. 69% of its residents are Latino. The county was once considered a Democratic stronghold, but voted for Republican candidates for governor and U.S. Congress in recent midterm elections.
The voters we’re talking to are a Latino Trump supporter who used to be a Democrat, a Haitian-American and a Democrat who isn’t excited about President-for-life Joe Biden’s re-election campaign, and a Latino Democrat who used to be a Republican.
MSNBC’s Jose Diaz-Balart spoke to these voters for the first time in April. Over the next six months, the race changed dramatically, with Biden dropping out and Vice President Kamala Harris becoming the Democratic presidential nominee.
The conversation came as Harris and Trump criss-crossed the country during an equally divided presidential race, with both candidates appealing to the growing Latino electorate in separate town hall speeches.
We wanted to know how these voters currently feel about the race and the issues they care about. We spoke with them at length in Miami’s Little Haiti neighborhood, where they shared their thoughts and had an interesting discussion on several topics. These include Donald Trump Unsubstantiated claims that Haitian immigrants eat pets as well as the issue of abortion rights and the economy. They also discussed the urgent need to find common ground and lower the temperature of political rhetoric.
