Routh wore black, thick-rimmed glasses and was clean-shaven, in stark contrast to the white beard he had sported during his previous detention hearing.
Routh was handcuffed at the wrists, waist and ankles and was escorted into court by a US marshal wearing a suit and black latex gloves.

When the bills were read to him, Reinhart asked Root if he understood, and he replied, “Yes, your honor.”
In the hearing, which lasted less than five minutes, defense attorneys waived a formal reading of the charges, pleaded not guilty and formally requested a jury trial.
Federal prosecutors allege in a five-count indictment that on September 15, Routh “intentionally attempted to kill Donald J. Trump, the former president of the United States and the leading presidential candidate.”

In addition to attempted murder, Routh was also charged with assault on a federal officer and three other weapons violations. If convicted on all counts, he could spend the rest of his life behind bars.
