A Republican state senator from West Virginia is being asked to resign by his local GOP party chair after he was arrested on drunken driving charges — his second arrest in as many months.
State Sen. Mike Maroney, who was first elected in 2016, was charged and arrested in August. indecent exposure.
“While the legal process must take its course, the perception of impropriety and repeated legal confusion surrounding Senator Maroney has brought the West Virginia Senate into disrepute,” said Monongalia County Republican Executive Committee Chairman Ethan Moore. in his statement. “We believe that the resignation of Senator Maroney, who serves the interests of Senate District 2 and the state, will restore public confidence and the integrity of the Senate.”
Moore’s committee passed a resolution calling for Maroney’s resignation and calling on Republican Gov. Jim Justice, a US Senate candidate, to give the state Senate the power to impeach or impeach him unless he voluntarily resigns.
Maroney did not immediately respond to an email for comment Friday night.
He was defeated in the Republican primary in May and his term will expire in January.
Maroney was chairman of the state Senate’s Health and Human Resources Committee, but was stripped of the post after he was arrested Aug. 4 for exposing himself in a video lottery room at Gumby’s Cigarette & Beer World in Glen Dale. Associated Press informed.
On Monday, Maroney was arrested and charged with driving under the influence after being stopped for allegedly driving erratically in a school zone. WTRF.com A criminal case has been opened.
