WASHINGTON – The Supreme Court rejected an attempt by independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy to appear on the general election ballot in New York on Friday.
Kennedy suspended his presidential campaign and endorsed the Republican candidate Donald TrumpIt is fighting to appear on the ballot in certain states over Democratic opposition.
The court rejected the petition short orderno opposition was noted.
There are Democrats in the past lost the election due to a strong third party vote. New York is not a swing state, unlike some of the other states where Kennedy is on the ballot, but Trump has repeatedly said he wants to win his home state.
Earlier this year, Kennedy’s aide was fired video appeared he said the top priority of the campaign was to prevent then-Democratic candidate Joe Biden from winning the election in potentially winnable states like New York. The campaign denied it was part of its strategy.
Kennedy’s lawyers said the state court was wrong to rule that he could not be on the ballot because of a dispute over his residency. Kennedy lives in California, but listed a New York address as his residence when he circulated a petition to appear on the ballot.
After losing in state court, Kennedy filed an emergency petition in federal court, but lost at both the district court and appellate court levels before reaching the Supreme Court.
