WASHINGTON — Speaker Mike Johnson said the House will vote Wednesday a six-month interim funding bill associated with legislation Proof of citizenship is required to register to vote – same package o suddenly pulled from the floor amid growing GOP opposition last week.

Johnson, a Louisiana Republican, spent the weekend calling members and trying to turn GOP defectors into the yes column. But the Republicans have a slight majority of 220-211 and some members general resistance to short-term bills Johnson’s package, known as continuing resolutions or CRs, is highly unlikely to pass the House.

If Democrats and Republicans fail to agree on a funding bill, the federal government will shut down at 12:01 a.m. on October 1. Johnson’s plan calls for a half-year CR tied to the Donald Trump-backed SAVE Act, though the package will die when it reaches the Democratic-led Senate and faces a veto threat from President Joe Biden.

“Congress has an immediate obligation to do two things: responsibly fund the federal government and ensure the security of our elections. Because we owe it to our constituents, we will move forward on Wednesday with a vote on the 6-month CR along with the SAVE Act,” Johnson said in a statement Tuesday.

“I urge all my colleagues to do what the vast majority of the people of this county rightly demand and deserve – to prevent non-American citizens from voting in American elections,” he said.

The White House, Democrats in Congress and some Republicans are pushing for an even shorter-term bill that would keep the government open until December, after the election. That would buy bilateral negotiators more time to reach an agreement on fiscal year 2025 funding.

In a speech Monday, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., criticized Johnson and his party for trying to pass a fiscal measure that had no chance in the upper chamber.

“Mr. Speaker Johnson, you know as well as anyone that your plan as written is impossible. Six months of CR with poison pills is not going to fly in a narrowly divided government,” Schumer said.

“If the hard left thinks we’ll give them leverage to willingly subdue them.” Project 2025 They are dreaming by agreeing to a six-month CR early next year, shoving it down the throats of the American people,” he said.
