“If you think about the moment we’re in and how serious this moment is, my father believes and says clearly that there has never been a more serious threat to our democracy in our country than Donald. That’s what Trump is,” Cheney said. “And this is the moment we meet.”

People “don’t have the luxury of writing in candidates’ names, especially in swing states,” Liz Cheney said Wednesday at Duke University. Donald Trump, but I’m going to vote for Kamala Harris,” he said.

Asked for comment on Cheney’s remarks on Friday, Trump campaign spokesman Stephen Cheung said, “Who is Liz Cheney?”

The former congressman also said during a Friday interview with The Atlantic’s Mark Leibovitch that he will support Rep. Colin Allred, D-Texas, to run for state Senate. Allred is challenging Republican Sen. Ted Cruz, who has served in the Senate since 2013.

“Here in Texas, you have a big, serious candidate for the United States Senate, and his name is…” he paused as the audience cheered and Leibovitch asked them to let him speak.

“This is not Ted Cruz,” he said.

Cheney praised Allred’s credentials, citing his time in the House with him.

“We need people who will serve with integrity,” Cheney said. “We need people who are honorable public servants, and that’s Colin Allred in this race. So I’m going to work on his behalf.”

In a statement, Allred called Cheney a “patriot” and said she was “honored to have his support.”

“While we may not agree on everything, we have found common ground by putting our country above political parties,” Allred said. “What matters is that we both believe in protecting our democracy, our constitution, and the founding promises of our great country. And we both agree that Texans cannot afford six more years of Ted Cruz.”

The Allred campaign also noted that she and Cheney have co-sponsored more than 50 bills, a sign of their efforts to work across the aisle.

When reached for comment, a spokesperson for the Cruz campaign called Cheney “the poster child for flip-flopping.”

“We were very surprised to hear that Liz Cheney, the poster child of flip-flopping, has endorsed Colin Allred,” a spokesperson said. “Two years ago, Wyoming voters overwhelmingly rejected Colin Allred, just as Texas voters will overwhelmingly reject Colin Allred this November. But hey, adversity loves company.”

Harris campaign spokeswoman Liz Cheney did not comment on the remarks, but pointed to NBC News’ efforts to expand the campaign’s reach with Republican voters.

The Cheneys are the latest constant flow Republicans who plan to vote for Harris despite their policy differences.

last week, More than 200 Republicans Sen. Mitt Romney, who worked for both Bush presidents, and the late Sen. John McCain have announced their support for Harris.

“Certainly, we have many honest, ideological differences with Vice President Harris and Governor Waltz. That’s to be expected,” the former staffer said, “Alternatively, but simply unacceptable.”

Several prominent Democratic critics of Trump, including former Illinois Rep. Adam Kinzinger, took the stage at the Democratic National Convention last month to endorse Harris. In his speech, Kinzinger urged voters to “put country first” and that he claimed Trump has “suffocated the soul” of the GOP.
