D.C. Councilman Trayon White Sr. was arrested Sunday on federal bribery charges, the Justice Department said Monday.
The criminal complaint alleges that beginning in June, White agreed to pay $156,000 in kickbacks to government employees at the Office of Neighborhood Safety and Engagement and DYRS in exchange for using his role as a D.C. councilman to pressure him to extend several contracts in the district.
A spokesperson for the DC City Council told NBC News that White was arrested Sunday around 2 p.m. Spokeswoman Lindsey Walton said the board had no prior knowledge of the investigation against White.
The city council did not immediately respond to an additional request for comment Monday.
