WASHINGTON — Vice President Kamala Harris on Monday applauded President Joe Biden and his successes in the White House in her first public speech since then. approved him for the presidency.
Harris said Biden’s “legacy of accomplishment over the last three years is unmatched in modern history.”
“In one term, he has surpassed the legacy of most presidents who have already served two terms,” Harris said on the South Lawn of the White House at an event celebrating the 2023-24 championship-winning NCAA athletes.
The vice president said he witnessed the president’s “integrity” and “integrity,” his “devotion to his faith and family,” his “big heart and deep love for our country.”
“I witness first hand that every day our President Joe Biden fights for the American people, and we are deeply, deeply grateful for his service to our nation,” he said.
Harris said he wanted to attend the event, which Biden has hosted in past years, and that he was “feeling better” and “recovering quickly” from his Covid diagnosis last week.
“He’s looking forward to getting back on the road,” she said of Biden, who has been isolated at his home in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware.
The spotlight is on Harris after he endorsed Biden on Sunday, minutes after announcing he was dropping out of the 2024 presidential race.
Harris said in a statement on Sunday that he was honored to win Biden’s endorsement and that his “intention is to pursue and win this nomination.”
Many Democrats have since, including some high-profile governors and legislators He endorsed Harris’ candidacy for the presidency. But other leaders in Congress, including Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, have yet to publicly express their support.
As expected, Harris did not directly address the presidential campaign during his remarks on Monday, as it was an official White House event.
Later, Harris is expected to talk about his candidacy, his path forward and his plan to defeat former President Donald Trump. He also said that he planned Traveling to Wilmington, Delaware, to meet with campaign staff there.
