A New York judge oversees Donald Trump’s case hush money trial appealed to the lawyers in the case regarding the post on social media to follow the former president’s guilty verdict.
“Today, the Court became aware of the comment posted on the Unified Court System’s public Facebook page, which I have now brought to your attention,” the judge said. Juan Merchan wrote in a letter on friday.
“My cousin is a juror and told me that Trump was on trial,” Merchan said, according to the letter. “Thank you for all your hard work!!!!!”
Merchan said the comment, attributed to a user identified as Michael Anderson, was “now marked as one week old” and was posted in response to the court’s May 29 regular notice of unrelated oral arguments. Trump’s business.
A defendant convicted by a jury but not yet sentenced may vacate the conviction under New York criminal procedure law when he learns of jury misconduct. The remedy is a new trial if the defendant can prove that the jury’s misconduct “may have affected a substantial right of the defendant.”
NBC News has not confirmed the allegations made in the comment or the identity of the user who posted the post, which has since been deleted. NBC News has also not independently confirmed the comment’s existence.
A Trump campaign official said “we are investigating” when asked about Mercha’s letter.
Trump’s attorneys did not immediately respond to a request for comment Friday afternoon, nor did a spokeswoman for the Manhattan district attorney’s office.
