In an interview with Fox News, Rubio said Trump’s trial was a “quintessential show trial” and “what you see in communist countries.” According to him, Trump’s trial is “an attempt to interfere in the elections”.

Rubio was born in Miami and his parents left Cuba in the 1950s, before Castro came to power. Cruz was born in Canada and his Cuban father came to the United States in 1957 during the Cuban Revolution.
Cruz said the guilty verdict is “your kind of thing look at the banana republics.” He claimed in the interview that “his heart is burning for the rule of law”.
However, Cruz and Rubio “should know better,” said a historian of American political rhetoric and its relationship to democracy.
“What you’re really seeing with the charges brought by Trump, Rubio and Cruz is that they’re essentially playing an authoritarian role as they try to undermine the rule of law,” said Jennifer Mercieca, a professor at Texas A&M. College Station and author of Demagogue for President: The Rhetorical Genius of Donald Trump.
“These are smart people. They have law degrees,” he said of Rubio and Cruz. “They have a history with authoritarian regimes in their families and a direct personal history with Donald Trump.”

Former Rep. Carlos Curbelo, R-Fla., an analyst for NBC News, said, “People can reasonably suggest or think that this prosecutor is politically motivated, but Mr. Trump and his lawyers have been able to take advantage of the time. the process will continue and due process will continue.”
“To say there is no due process in the United States is incorrect,” Curbelo said, adding that some legal experts thought Trump had a decent chance to appeal the verdict.
“My grandfather was a victim of a political trial in Cuba, and it was not like the system in the United States, although imperfect is the fairest system in the world,” Curbelo said. “The more we legitimize our institutions, the closer we are to an authoritarian state — the less Americans trust our elections, the closer we are to losing our freedoms and liberties.”
