Florida Sen. Rick Scott enters race to succeed McConnell as GOP Senate leader

Sen. Rick Scott of Florida announced Tuesday that he is jumping race to succeed Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell after he steps down later this year.

The Wall Street Journal reported first About Scott’s plans, he later shared it publicly Writing in X. In a letter to colleagues obtained by NBC News, he said his bid to become Republican leader was motivated by his belief that “now is the moment we need dramatic change.”

Scott joins a competitive race to take over from McConnell, who served a record 18 years in the role. Other claimants for the role of Senate Minority Whip John Thune, RSD. and include Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, a former whip. Other candidates can still bid for the position, as the vote will not be held until after the November election.
