In his next first ad State of the Union addressThe Biden campaign released a new ad listing the administration’s accomplishments while making light-hearted references to the president’s age.
“Look, I’m not a young man. It’s no secret to anyone,” says 81-year-old Biden in the announcement. “But that’s the deal. I understand how to get things done for the American people. I led the country through the Covid crisis. Today we have the strongest economy in the world.”
The 60-second spot, which ran Saturday, is the first in a six-week, $30 million ad buy announced by the campaign this week. It will be broadcast on local broadcasts and cable television in critical states such as Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, North Carolina, Nevada, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, and will target young voters and voters of color in cities such as Atlanta, Detroit, Las Vegas, Madison, Philadelphia. Phoenix and Raleigh.
The ad gives a glimpse of how the campaign aims to address the conversation around Biden’s age, which polls show is a liability in his re-election bid. “You all want to talk about age? Let’s talk about age,” campaign communications director Michael Tyler said in a statement Saturday.
“At 77, Joe Biden defeated Donald Trump. At 78, he led us through the COVID crisis, helped us create nearly 15 million new jobs since taking office, and passed the Bipartisan Infrastructure Act to repair our roads and build bridges and every community expand broadband access to,” Tyler said. “At 79, he got us the most important gun safety legislation in a generation and became the first president to defeat Big Pharma and lower the cost of insulin to $35 for seniors.”
In the last few seconds of the new ad, someone off-camera asks the president for “one more shot.”
“Look, I’m so young, energetic and handsome, why am I doing this?” Biden jokes.
The ad also called for the 2022 infrastructure law, lowering prescription drug prices, and the president’s Roe v. “Make Wade the law of the land again,” aiming to contrast Biden and Trump.
“Donald Trump believes that the president’s job is to take care of Donald Trump,” Biden says in the ad. “I believe the president’s job is to fight for you, the American people, and that’s what I’m doing.”
