Two incidents within days of each other prompted local law enforcement to respond to Haley’s residence on Kiawah Island. He was never home.
On Dec. 30, the Charleston County sheriff’s patrol unit responded to a 911 caller who claimed he had shot a woman at a Haley address and threatened to harm herself, according to county records.
Two days later, the sheriff’s office responded to a 911 call about a man who said a woman had shot her daughter and was going to shoot himself, records show.
Law enforcement said both times at the home, they met with the caretaker of Haley’s parents, 87 and 90, and confirmed the calls were fake.
A spokesman for Haley’s campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment Monday night.
A spokesman for the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office said Monday that both cases were closed but would be reopened if the agency receives new leads.
“False reports to law enforcement are not only criminal, but also an incredibly dangerous waste of taxpayer money and public resources,” said spokeswoman Amber Allen. “These types of cases are difficult to investigate because they are generated from untraceable phone numbers. However, law enforcement is following these incidents and we are working with our state and federal partners to identify the perpetrators whenever possible.”
Discussing the first swatting incident, Haley said on NBC’s “Meet the Press” on Sunday that it “goes to show the chaos surrounding our country right now and that these things are happening.”
Swatting involves giving false information about a crime in progress to attract the police to a particular location.
